“So, what is the opposite of goodness?”<\/em> the interviewee asked. Before we could even begin the first interview for the Goodness Pays<\/em> book project, the executive presented significant resistance. “I need to know if you are trying to paint the picture that the opposite of ‘goodness’ is ‘badness,’<\/em>\u00a0he continued. Here’s how I answered:<\/p>\n

Honoring the critic<\/strong><\/p>\n

The most rewarding part of building a movement\u00a0<\/em>is honoring the critic. The critics say aloud what many others are thinking and feeling. And sometimes, I’m my harshest critic. What do I really mean?<\/p>\n

I do not think ‘badness’ is the opposite of goodness. Instead, I think narrow-minded, indecisive selfishness is the opposite of goodness.<\/p>\n

\"Goodness“Ok, that helps,”<\/em> he mused. “My reaction to your subject is that ‘goodness’ is a concept that’s lost its power in the context of\u00a0<\/em>religion,\u00a0<\/em>corporate social responsibility\u00a0or <\/em>self-righteousness. I really do believe <\/em>goodness pays, but\u00a0I don’t want to be a mouthpiece for any goody-two-shoes message,”<\/em> he said emphatically.<\/p>\n

Building courage<\/strong><\/p>\n

We embraced this mission\u00a0because our clients are thriving by concentrating on goodness as both an intention<\/em> and an outcome<\/em> of their leadership. They are definitely happier, healthier and more magnetic as leaders.<\/p>\n

It’s not about promoting a “goody-two-shoes” dialogue. It’s about producing business results through\u00a0excellence, generosity, fairness\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0positivity. We believe the opposite of excellence is indifference<\/em>.\u00a0The opposite of generosity is selfish<\/em>. The opposite of fairness is obstruction<\/em>. And the opposite of positivity is toxic<\/em>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n
