{"id":28350,"date":"2011-05-13T21:53:34","date_gmt":"2011-05-14T02:53:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.paulbatz.com\/?p=1193"},"modified":"2011-05-13T21:53:34","modified_gmt":"2011-05-14T02:53:34","slug":"its-how-we-live-not-what-we-do-for-a-living-that-defines-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/its-how-we-live-not-what-we-do-for-a-living-that-defines-us\/","title":{"rendered":"Its how we live &#8211; not what we do for a living that defines us"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today, I\u2019m feeling profound sadness and intense self-reflection as I heard the words of Harmon Killebrew telling the world his cancer is no longer treatable.\u00a0\u00a0 Here are the Hall of Famer\u2019s wise and precious words shared through the media:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1194\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1194\" style=\"width: 211px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Killebrew-1.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1194\" title=\"Killebrew\" src=\"https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Killebrew-1-211x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"211\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1194\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Harmon Killebrew: hero for how he lives his life<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;With the continued love and support of my wife, Nita, I have exhausted all options,&#8221;(for treating esophageal cancer) Killebrew said. He added: &#8220;I have spent the past decade of my life promoting hospice care and educating people on its benefits. I am very comfortable taking this next step and experiencing the compassionate care that hospice provides.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Killebrew, who&#8217;s 11th on baseball&#8217;s all-time home run list with 573, thanked his well-wishers for their support.\u00a0 &#8220;I look forward to spending my final days in comfort and peace with my wife Nita by my side,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Several years ago, I was in the \u00a0presence of one of my real-world heroes, as he spoke similar words.\u00a0 Don Backstrom \u2013 super-lawyer and Rotarian extraordinaire \u2013 stood in heroic posture and announced to the Minneapolis City of Lakes Rotary Club that he could no longer fight his own battle with cancer.\u00a0 He looked so alive and so courageous.\u00a0 So amazingly, admiringly real. \u00a0His composure and peace were unmistakable.\u00a0 Grown men and women cried and swelled with pride in the same breath.<\/p>\n<p>Six weeks later, I saw the hearse retrieve his physical shell from his home in Bloomington, Minnesota \u2013 he and his wife lived less than a thousand yards from our family\u2019s front door.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m 48 years old\u2026about halftime in my journey.\u00a0 Don Backstrom and Harmon Killebrew lived only about 25 years longer than me.\u00a0 Don\u2019s personal eulogy that day in Rotary \u2013 and today\u2019s announcement by Harmon Killebrew \u2013 are powerful reminders of my basic point of view:\u00a0 It\u2019s how we live our lives (and face our death) that defines us \u2013 not what we do for a living.<\/p>\n<p>Harmon Killebrew will always be remembered as a hall of fame baseball player by the world at large.\u00a0 But not that way by his family.<\/p>\n<p>Don Backstrom will forever be remembered as a super-lawyer and an extraordinary Rotarian \u2013 an award will be given in perpetuity in his name.\u00a0 But his friends and family will remember how he lived the final steps of his journey.<\/p>\n<p>The rest of us have to live with the reality that we are not Hall of Famers, or Rotarians Extraordinaire.\u00a0 There probably won&#8217;t be any awards given in perpetuity in our names&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Good leaders understand that how they treat other people determines how they will be remembered.<\/p>\n<p>Lord, help us all live significant lives in the class and dignity of Harmon and Don.\u00a0 And share our gratitude every step of the journey. \u00a0 Carpe Diem. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today, I\u2019m feeling profound sadness and intense self-reflection as I heard the words of Harmon Killebrew telling the world his cancer is no longer treatable.\u00a0\u00a0 Here are the Hall of Famer\u2019s wise and precious words shared through the media: &#8220;With the continued love and support of my wife, Nita, I have exhausted all options,&#8221;(for treating [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[30],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-28350","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-leadership"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.4 -
