{"id":28360,"date":"2011-11-01T13:10:27","date_gmt":"2011-11-01T18:10:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.paulbatz.com\/?p=1340"},"modified":"2011-11-01T13:10:27","modified_gmt":"2011-11-01T18:10:27","slug":"whats-it-feel-like-to-be-in-the-presence-of-greatness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/whats-it-feel-like-to-be-in-the-presence-of-greatness\/","title":{"rendered":"What\u2019s it feel like to be in the presence of greatness?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/greatness-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1341\" title=\"greatness\" src=\"https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/greatness-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"192\" height=\"256\" \/><\/a>Have you ever experienced the mood-altering presence of <em>greatness? <\/em>There are some people who hold themselves in such a way that they  literally alter the mind-body chemistry of individuals, groups and  teams&#8230;Last week I met someone whose presence did that.<\/p>\n<p>DISCLAIMER: I have no idea who the guy is in this picture.\u00a0 I was so moved by <em>greatness<\/em> experience that I actually &#8220;Googled&#8221; the concept:  [People who represent Greatness].\u00a0 I found the most random stuff &#8212; including this guy. The caption read: <em>Most people associate greatness with power and money.<\/em> Maybe true&#8230;but that&#8217;s not what I&#8217;m talking about.\u00a0 And besides, this guy looks like he might be fighting back indigestion.<\/p>\n<p>To further my curiosity, one the same screen I found this guy&#8230;I also found a picture of Nelson Mandela &#8212; that&#8217;s more what I had in mind.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1342\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1342\" style=\"width: 275px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Packerskid-1.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1342\" title=\"Packerskid\" src=\"https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Packerskid-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1342\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Why in the world would anyone find this picture by Googling: Images of people who represent greatness?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But I also found THIS picture.\u00a0 Geesh&#8230;how in the kingdom can a 13 year old boy wearing a Green Bay Packers jersey and a cheese-head hat represent greatness?\u00a0 Disappointing.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve heard people describe being in the presence of Muhammad Ali as greatness.\u00a0 And Michael Jordan and even Bill and Hillary Clinton.\u00a0 To be certain, it&#8217;s &#8216;rare air&#8217; for anyone to actually be in the same room as these people. \u00a0 But I&#8217;m asking a different question:\u00a0 <em>have you ever personally<\/em> been in the physical presence (the same room) of a person who embodied <em>greatness?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Last week I felt greatness move through me.\u00a0 I do not have permission to share with you who gave me this experience, or where.\u00a0 But I can tell you how:<\/p>\n<p>In a small corporate meeting room, a very humble leader quietly entered a room occupied by approximately 20 very high paid executives: their new chief executive officer.\u00a0 He&#8217;s not from here and does not look like anyone else in the room.\u00a0 He spoke quietly, without notes.\u00a0 Each sentence increased clarity.\u00a0 He explained amazing new possibilities easily within reach.\u00a0 Calm.\u00a0 He also articulated what&#8217;s not acceptable, and how quickly he would make those judgements.\u00a0 Confidence. The message was new &#8212; an equal mix of invigoration and earth-shattering attack on the status quo that these leaders built, and profit from.<\/p>\n<p>He answered questions one after another with razor sharp articulation, demonstrating his intolerance for half-baked ideas and useless metaphors.\u00a0 Three specific times he began his answer with &#8220;That&#8217;s a good question&#8230;&#8221;\u00a0 The pulse of those three questioners danced like a 15-year old girl at a high school dance. Character builder.<\/p>\n<p>As I facilitated the debrief, one woman executive said: <em><strong>&#8220;our confidence has been elevated to a whole new level, and that&#8217;s great to see in this room.&#8221; <\/strong><\/em>No one thought about how much money he makes.\u00a0 No one cowered under his power.\u00a0 They were filled with calm, and confidence. \u00a0 And collectively, they knew the presence of this new leader would test and build their character.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s what it feels like to be in the presence of greatness.\u00a0 Drop me a line if you have a moment of &#8216;greatness&#8217; you wish to share&#8230;we will be grateful. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Have you ever experienced the mood-altering presence of greatness?
