{"id":28369,"date":"2012-03-06T13:25:40","date_gmt":"2012-03-06T19:25:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.paulbatz.com\/?p=1653"},"modified":"2012-03-06T13:25:40","modified_gmt":"2012-03-06T19:25:40","slug":"who-helps-you-grow-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/who-helps-you-grow-today\/","title":{"rendered":"Who helps you grow today?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/single-Sunflower-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1775\" title=\"Sunflower\" src=\"https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/single-Sunflower-1-300x97.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"97\" \/><\/a> On the cherry closet door in the kitchen of the Bloomington Batz home are two Post-it notes on the outside of the door &#8211; our girls stuck them there several years ago for the sole purpose of tracking the pace of their physical growth.\u00a0 There are ten lines, with corresponding feet\/inches, names and dates.\u00a0 With vertically challenged Batz genes, it&#8217;s not surprising the marks are not very far up on the door&#8230;or, that the marks stopped far short of aspirations.<\/p>\n<p> <figure id=\"attachment_1772\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1772\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/photo4-1.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1772\" title=\"photo[4]\" src=\"https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/photo4-1-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/photo4-1-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/photo4-1-610x456.jpg 610w, https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/photo4-1-600x448.jpg 600w, https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/photo4-1.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1772\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">These two Post-it notes are always good conversation starters at dinner parties in the Batz home.<\/figcaption><\/figure>The most recent marking is more than two years old &#8212; I wonder when (or if) we will ever remove those Post-its.\u00a0 It is a great reminder of our inherent quest to grow.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, I saw a famous person on television reveal something deeply personal, simple and wise.\u00a0 In reflecting on his fame, wealth and legacy, he said: <em><strong>&#8220;It&#8217;s not what we achieve&#8230;it&#8217;s what we overcome that defines us.&#8221; <\/strong><\/em>I suppose this could be translated into a Batz-ism&#8230;&#8221;it&#8217;s not how tall you get, it&#8217;s what you tackle as you grow.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We are all on the same journey, wrestling with &#8220;experience&#8221; as our best teacher.\u00a0 Its a daily process of reconciling the fact we are all gloriously gifted and talented&#8230;while dealing with the truth that we are all amazingly flawed.<\/p>\n<p>By now, you know I make my living as an executive coach &#8211; teaching gifted people how to be better leaders through coaching, writing and speaking.\u00a0 Our business, What Really Works, is more than two years old now&#8230;and we are very excited to launch our second major publishing project.\u00a0 With a razor sharp team of experts, we are proceeding with a national research project called: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.howleadersgrowtoday.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How Leaders Grow Today<\/a>. The result will be a leadership conference in May of 2013 and the launch of a book called: How Leaders Grow Today (clever, I know).\u00a0 My friend Paul Dominski and I are writing the book together, helping each other grow.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1773\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1773\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Dominski.HLGT_.Chair_-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1773\" title=\"Dominski.HLGT.Chair\" src=\"https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Dominski.HLGT_.Chair_-1-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"Paul Dominski, interviewed by me, for the video on the howleadersgrowtoday.com web site\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1773\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Watch Paul Dominski, interviewed by me, for the video on the howleadersgrowtoday.com web site<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Over the course of the coming year we will interview roughly 180 good leaders, from more than 60 small, medium and large corporations and non-profits.\u00a0 We expect to affirm some of the time-tested theories and uncover some new themes emerging in the Internet-in-everyone&#8217;s-pocket era.<\/p>\n<p>One prediction: we can&#8217;t grow without help from our friends.\u00a0 We all know <em>nothing significant is ever accomplished alone<\/em>&#8230;we need people in our lives who slap us when we are silly, catch us when we are free-falling and support us when it is time to step up to a new, bigger challenge.<\/p>\n<p>Good leaders surround themselves with people who are willing to put an honest mark on the door, to measure their own growth.<\/p>\n<p>Drop me a note: who helps you grow today?
