Two weeks ago, Tiger\u00a0removed himself from competition on the PGA Tour because in his own words: his golf is not acceptable for tournament play.\u00a0 That&#8217;s a blinding glimpse of the obvious. He hasn&#8217;t been a up to his own standards for several years. What I\u2019m wondering: does he understand why he\u2019s floundering?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">What I see is a world-class athlete whose behind the scenes life choices caused an epic collapse. The first public signs began here in Minneapolis\/St. Paul when he uncharacteristically folded under the pressure of the PGA Championship in 2009. An unknown golfer, Y.E. Yang, stared him down on the back nine at Hazeltine National and Tiger blinked. It was the first time he looked nervous, anxious and out-of-sorts on a major championship Sunday afternoon.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7559\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7559\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7559\" src=\"https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Yang.Victory.Scream-1-300x187.jpg\" alt=\"Little did we know: this moment was the beginning of the downward spiral for Tiger Woods. YE Yang beat him at Hazeltine in 2009.\" width=\"300\" height=\"187\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7559\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Little did we know, this moment was the beginning of the downward spiral for Tiger Woods. Y.E. Yang beat him at Hazeltine in 2009.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\">Soon after, we learned why. His marriage was failing and his dark secrets were soon to be revealed. Tiger\u2019s wife Elin swung a 9-iron at him when she learned about his absurd infidelity. The international media covered his divorce 24\/7 and spread the word about his sex addiction. Tiger looked and played like he was humiliated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Love or Fear?<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In my work as an executive leadership coach, we run everything through a binary lens: do your behaviors come from a place of <b><i>love <\/i><\/b>or <b><i>fear?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Fear in leaders and athletes is commonly expressed through fits of anger &#8211; or by retreating into a dark hole. Over the past six years, we\u2019ve seen a lot of anger from Tiger. ESPN loves showing him slamming his driver into the ground and grunting <i>\u201cG-Damnit Tiger!\u201d <\/i>to himself. Now he is retreating into the dark hole.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">We can all\u00a0empathize with Tiger &#8211; each of us is\u00a0beautifully gifted, and amazingly flawed. Thank heavens our fears and anger don\u2019t get broadcast\u00a0on ESPN.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Blending The\u00a0Seven Fs will help<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7558\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7558\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7558\" src=\"https:\/\/goodleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/angryTiger.Scream-1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Fear and anger always get in the way of greatness. I wish I could coach Tiger Woods.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\">It seems clear to me that Tiger needs to learn to forgive himself, as if he were his own best friend. Since the messy divorce he hasn\u2019t won a major championship, his reputation has plummeted, and his quest to surpass Jack Nicholas as the best golfer ever has all but vanished.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In golf, as in life, fear and anger get in the way. We cannot perform to our potential unless we learn to love ourselves first. What we concentrate on grows: if we are afraid of disappointment and humiliation, the downward spiral accelerates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">NBC\u2019s Golf Channel Analyst Brandel Chamblee agrees with me: <em>\u201cThe reason for Tiger\u2019s fall is his ill-fated mythical quest for perfection.\u201d<\/em> In other words, he\u2019s never satisfied \u2013 he can&#8217;t love himself enough to\u00a0get his edge back.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>The only way back to the top<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">No one benefits by watching Tiger&#8217;s mastery melt away. He\u2019s good for the game and the common good. If I were his coach, I\u2019d tell him to forget the gym and his swing coach!\u00a0 He needs to learn to love himself again, to love golf again and let go of his fear. He needs to let go of the idea that his game is not acceptable for tournament play. I would ask him: <em><strong>How can you find a way to enjoy everything about the game?<\/strong><\/em> Including:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00b7<span class=\"s1\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 S<\/span>hanking the ball into the trees<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00b7<span class=\"s1\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 T<\/span>he annoying paparazzi who invade his privacy<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u00b7<span class=\"s1\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 C<\/span>hili-dipping chip shots and missing three foot putts<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Because enjoying the misery of golf is also part of the breakfast of champions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Good leaders embrace their challenges\u00a0with\u00a0love instead of fear.
